The Music of Curawaka: Sound, Sacred Texture, and Lineage

The Sound: Voice First, Rhythm Underneath

Curawaka calls its music "sacred world music," and the phrase describes a specific arrangement. A powerful lead voice sits at the front. Beneath it runs a bed of Andean wind and string instruments, guitars, bass and a range of percussion. The voice belongs to Anna Bariyani, who founded the band and writes its songs. Her singing is full and projected rather than hushed, so this is music that asks for attention instead of settling into the background.

The instrument list gives the palette. The charango supplies a bright, strummed string color. The quena and sikuri flutes carry breathy melodic lines. Guitars and bass anchor the low and middle of the sound, while ceremonial rhythms provide the pulse. Because the band leans on melodic line and rhythm more than on dense, chord-heavy pop writing, the texture tends to feel open and driven by pattern. The bio does not state tempos, so it is safest to say that the pacing is shaped by the rhythms rather than by a fixed groove.

Language is part of the timbre. Bariyani sings in seven languages: Hatcha Kuin, Yawanawa, Sami, Spanish, Portuguese, English and her native Norwegian. Moving between them changes the vowels, consonants and phrasing from song to song, so the catalogue carries several sonic worlds inside one band.

Tradition and Lineage

Curawaka does not claim a single spiritual lineage, and it is more accurate to describe the work as a cross-cultural practice built on study, collaboration and respect for indigenous traditions. The bio states that the band has spent years living with and learning from indigenous tribes around the globe, and that it has studied for many years with the Wixarika people. That is the most clearly documented thread, and the Wixarika ceremonial world informs how the group approaches sacred music.

No guru, teacher or formal line of transmission is named. Bariyani's songs celebrate the voices of the peoples of the natural world, their spirituality and sacred practices. The band's subject matter touches shamanism, ceremonies, shamanic drumming and sacred chant, which puts it nearer to medicine music than to conventional concert folk. Those subjects describe what the work engages with, not a credential held by the band.

The Signature Contribution

Three things set Curawaka apart. The first is the multilingual songwriting: one lead singer carrying indigenous tongues such as Hatcha Kuin and Yawanawa alongside Sami and several European languages, within a single project. Many world-music acts root themselves in one tradition and one language, and this approach stands apart from that.

The second is the way the instruments are used. Charango, quena and sikuri flutes sit beside guitars, bass and percussion as full voices in the arrangement, not as decorative color.

The third is the dual life of the group. Curawaka performs live and also leads retreats and workshops on voice, medicine music and what Bariyani describes as weaving voice and spirit, so recordings and ceremonial work inform each other. Sales from band merchandise support the Curawaka Alliance Fund, the most concrete link the band names to the communities it learns from.

Collaborators and Co-Artists

The band was formed by artists from Norway, Mexico and Argentina. Alongside Bariyani, the bio names Tavo Vazquez, Alberto Arroyo, Dario Santamaria Romero, Sabrina Figueroa and Raffa Martinez as the musicians who bring charango, quena, sikuri flutes, guitars, bass and percussion. The bio does not assign particular instruments to particular players, so it is best not to guess.

Producers have also reshaped the material. The 2026 reinterpretations come from Namirí, Crussen, Nils Olav, J. Pool, Ida Engberg, Mose and ALUNA. Earlier reworkings include an ALUNA remix of Cuñaq and a Mose remix of Te Nande. The bandmates and the remixers shape the sound in different ways, one from inside the ensemble and the other from outside it.

A First-Listen Guide

Start with the debut, Call of the Wild (Nixi Music, 2018), which introduced Noku Mana, Te Nande and He Yama Yo. It shows the core formula plainly: Bariyani's voice moving through indigenous-language lyrics while charango, quena and sikuri flutes carry the ceremonial rhythm. Dreamtime (2023, ten tracks) comes next and shows how the sound developed after years of touring. OLOKUN (2025) calls on the sacred feminine forces of the sea. The single Shamboriri, in its 2022 original and a J. Pool remix, works as a short test before committing to a full album.

Expect some surprises. The first is force. Listeners who anticipate whispered devotional singing may be struck by how much weight the voice carries. The second is the language: many lyrics arrive in Sami, Yawanawa, Hatcha Kuin or Spanish, and translations are not part of the profile. The third is the instruments, which are often treated as background in other projects but here share the foreground with the voice. The remixes lean toward electronic and club-adjacent territory, so they are a different listening session from the original recordings.

Curawaka is a poor fit for anyone wanting high-BPM dance music or ambient sound with no vocal focus. Skeptics of sacred or ceremonial vocabulary may also feel distanced, since the spiritual framing is central. The test is whether you can sit with a sustained ceremonial vocal line without needing it to resolve quickly.

Place in the Conscious-Music Landscape

With roughly 192,600 Spotify followers, nearly a decade on the road, hundreds of live performances and two world tours, Curawaka has built steady, long-running interest rather than a single viral hit. In the wider landscape of sacred and conscious music, it sits between ceremonial voice work and global-folk ensemble playing, with a remix program that reaches toward club-adjacent listeners. It is not a quiet-meditation project and not a pure folk act. It is a vocal-led band with ceremonial rhythm, grounded in years of relationship with indigenous communities, and that grounding is what separates it from projects that borrow only a surface aesthetic.
