Padmasambhava

Indian Buddhist master who carried Vajrayana Buddhism from India to Tibet in the 8th century, traditionally credited with subduing the local Bön spirits and establishing the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Known to Tibetans as Guru Rinpoche ("Precious Master") and revered as a second Buddha, he is said to have hidden thousands of teachings (terma) for future generations to discover when the world was ready. His traditional biographies blend history with deep mystical teaching, and his name remains one of the most invoked in Tibetan prayer. The Nyingma lineage, the Dzogchen teachings, and much of the Tibetan tantric heritage trace directly to him.
