Glossary

Indie Pop

A music genre combining melodic guitar pop with DIY ethos, originating from British post-punk in the late 1970s and defined by jangly guitars, catchy hooks, and independent spirit.

What is Indie Pop?

Indie pop is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with a DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. Indie pop is defined by its DIY ethos, upbeat melodies, and an overarching sense of “authenticity,” primarily taking influences from post-punk, jangle pop, and its counterpart, indie rock.

The genre represents a deliberate counterpoint to commercial pop production. Music critic Simon Reynolds says that indie pop defines itself against “charting pop”. Rather than manufactured studio perfection, indie pop emphasizes sincerity, emotional directness, and lo-fi production values that privilege songcraft over polish.

Origins & Lineage

Indie pop originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Reynolds has said that “what we now know as indie music was invented in Scotland,” with reference to the emergence of Postcard Records in 1979. Glasgow’s Postcard Records released early singles by Orange Juice and Josef K, bands that softened post-punk’s abrasiveness while retaining its independence.

Brisbane band the Go-Betweens were an early influential indie pop band, releasing their first single “Lee Remick” in 1978. The Smiths, influenced by the Monochrome Set’s early singles, went on to be one of the most important and commercially successful bands in the genre. New Zealand’s Dunedin sound was a key influence on indie music, with bands such as the Chills, the Clean, Tall Dwarfs, the Verlaines, the Bats and Straitjacket Fits setting the stage for indie pop music.

The pivotal moment came in 1986. C86 is a cassette compilation released by the British music magazine NME in 1986, featuring new bands licensed from British independent record labels of the time. As a term, C86 quickly evolved into shorthand for a guitar-based music genre characterized by jangling guitars and melodic power pop song structures. The C86 scene is now recognised as a pivotal moment for independent music in the UK, as was acknowledged in the subtitle of the compilation’s 2006 CD issue: CD86: 48 Tracks from the Birth of Indie Pop.

Sarah Records was a British independent record label active in Bristol between 1987 and 1995, best known for its recordings of indie pop, which it released mostly on 7" singles. On reaching the catalogue number SARAH 100, the label celebrated its 100th release by throwing a party and shutting itself down. The label was formed in Bristol in 1987 by Clare Wadd and Matt Haynes and grew out of the fanzine scene at the time.

How It’s Practiced

Indie pop manifests as a constellation of sonic and cultural practices. Musically its key characteristics were jangling guitars, a love of sixties pop and often fey, innocent lyrics. The genre favors simple chord progressions, trebly guitar tones (often using Rickenbacker or Fender Jazzmaster guitars), straightforward rhythms, and boy-girl vocal harmonies.

These bands challenged aggressive and machismo punk rock conventions by embracing a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic whilst frequently singing innocent, sensitive and authentic songs about young love and adolescence. Production values tend toward four-track recordings, bedroom studios, and cassette releases—not from poverty but as aesthetic choice.

Music journalist Nitsuh Abebe noted in Pitchfork that indie pop is not just “indie” that is “pop,” and that fans have their own names for themselves, the music they listen to, their own canon of legendary bands and legendary labels, their own pop stars, their own zines, websites, mailing lists, aesthetics, festivals, iconography, fashion accessories and in-jokes—in short, their own culture.

Subgenres include twee pop and chamber pop. Twee pop is a subgenre of indie pop that originally emerged in the United Kingdom during the mid-to late 1980s. The style has been described as “excessively or affectedly quaint, pretty, or sentimental” and initially rose to prominence through the NME’s C86 cassette compilation.

Indie Pop Today

In the US, Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson had founded K Records in Olympia, Washington, in 1982. During the 1990s the label released bands such as Lois, Tiger Trap, the Softies, All Girl Summer Fun Band, and Gaze. K and later labels like Slumberland (Velocity Girl, Rocketship, Henry’s Dress, Black Tambourine) and Harriet (Tullycraft, the Magnetic Fields) encouraged the genre’s spread across the country.

Scotland’s Belle and Sebastian began releasing albums in 1996, with their fandom initially spreading by word-of-mouth. They used a more lush instrumentation than the typical rock band format, with their songs including trumpets and violins, closer to what is called chamber pop. The real turning point for the genre in terms of mainstream popularity was the release of The Postal Service’s Give Up in 2003. While not a major seller at start, good word of mouth and the rising popularity of lead singer Ben Gibbard’s other band Death Cab for Cutie resulted in it becoming something of an indie rock cult classic. The album was certified Platinum in the United States and its single “Such Great Heights” became one of the most popular indie songs of the whole decade.

Indie pop thrives today through independent labels, Bandcamp releases, college radio stations, and festivals. Slumberland Records are still a going concern having celebrated their 35th year in early 2025. The genre has fragmented into microgenres: bedroom pop, laptop twee, chamber pop, and noise pop all trace lineage to the C86 cassette.

Common Misconceptions

Indie pop is not simply pop music made by independent artists. In later years, the definition of indie pop has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Many indie pop artists sign to major labels; conversely, many artists on independent labels make music entirely outside the indie pop aesthetic.

The genre is not defined by lyrical naïveté. Many of the groups were distinctly political. For example, McCarthy were a far-left Marxist band whose lyrics concerned alienation of the youth and the tragedy of capitalism they perceived around them, all welting with vitriol.

In its time, C86 became a pejorative term for its associations with so-called “shambling” (a John Peel-coined description celebrating the self-conscious primitive approach of some of the music) and underachievement. Critics dismissed indie pop as twee and inconsequential, accusations the scene both rejected and, at times, embraced ironically.

Indie pop is not interchangeable with indie rock. Indie rock distinguishes itself from indie pop as it is generally rougher and more hard-edged.

How to Begin

Begin with the C86 compilation (1986, NME), the genre’s Rosetta Stone. Listen to The Pastels, Primal Scream’s early work, and The Wedding Present. Follow with Sarah Records’ catalogue: The Field Mice’s Skywriting (1990), Heavenly’s P.U.N.K. Girl EP (1995), and any release numbered SARAH 001–100.

Explore K Records in the US: Beat Happening’s Jamboree (1988) and Tiger Trap’s self-titled album (1993). For chamber pop’s orchestral turn, hear Belle and Sebastian’s If You’re Feeling Sinister (1996). For contemporary iterations, investigate Alvvays, The Umbrellas, or Bandcamp tags for “jangle pop” and “C86.”

Read Michael White’s Popkiss: The Life and Afterlife of Sarah Records (2015) and Nige Tassell’s Whatever Happened to the C86 Kids? (2022) for movement history. Explore fanzines archived at indie-is-not-a-genre.com and rateyourmusic.com’s genre pages for deep taxonomies.
