Guitarist
Micki Free is a Grammy-winning guitarist, songwriter, performer and producer whose career spans decades. He is of Cherokee, Comanche and Irish descent, and describes his heritage as a deep influence on his sound and artistic journey. His work blends blues, rock and Native American sounds.
His career took off early, with management deals with Gene Simmons of KISS and Diana Ross. He became a member of the R&B group Shalamar, known for the hit "Dancing in the Sheets" from the film Footloose, and formed a lasting friendship with Prince there. His look in the early 1980s was parodied in the Chappelle's Show sketch "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories: Prince – Uncensored", which retells the basketball game "The Shirts Against The Blouses".
As a solo artist, Micki has performed and recorded with Carlos Santana, Janet Jackson, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Little Steven Van Zandt, Cindy Blackman-Santana, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, Bill Wyman, Neil Young, KISS, Billy Ray Cyrus and others. He has played everything from intimate blues clubs to the Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park, London. In 2023 he served as an official Envoy for the World Culture Festival on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. There he led a 1,000-plus guitar ensemble in "We Are One", a song he wrote, produced and arranged for the occasion.
Micki is also a master of the Native American flute, with five albums dedicated to it. He has played since around 2005, when a Native brother gave him his first flute. He now owns more than a dozen, and from time to time gifts one to someone else, passing on the blessing. On his Insight Timer page he describes the flute as an instrument that can bring peace, harmony, relaxation, love and positive energy. He is a five-time Native American Music Award winner and was inducted into the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2020.
With his wife Heather, he founded The Musical Beginning Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization that empowers underrepresented youth through music and helps people reach their creative dreams.
Worth Knowing
Micki Free is a Grammy-winning guitarist and songwriter whose career has straddled two distinct musical worlds: the high-profile rock, blues, and R&B collaborations that defined decades of his performance, and his deep mastery of the Native American flute as a healing and meditative instrument. His heritage—Cherokee, Comanche, and Irish descent—shapes how he approaches both realms, bringing what he describes as a "deep influence" on his sound and artistic journey. The breadth of his collaborators reads like a map of serious musicians: Carlos Santana, Janet Jackson, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Neil Young, Prince (with whom he formed a lasting friendship during his Shalamar era), Cindy Blackman-Santana, and many others across rock, R&B, and avant-garde spaces. Beyond performance, Micki has invested in systemic change through The Musical Beginning Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife Heather to empower underrepresented youth through music education. People care about his work because he refuses to stay in one lane—he's equally credible as a session player on major projects, a master of an ancient instrument, and an advocate for creative access. His 2023 role as an official Envoy for the World Culture Festival, where he led a 1,000-plus guitarist ensemble in "We Are One," exemplifies his commitment to music as a vehicle for collective unity and cultural bridge-building.
